  being prepared for advising

  talk to your advisor
  • Make an appointment.
    • Check your college's website first for appointment information.
    • Call the department if necessary.

  • Meet with your adviser before "the big rush"; i.e., about ten weeks into the semester.

  • Be prepared because your appointment will be about thirty minutes.

  • Check out Degree Navigator before your appointment: https://ntweb1.ais.msu.edu/degnav

  • Read the graduation requirements for your major before your appointment.

  • Write down questions you have.

  • Bring a list of electives you are interested in. Consult the Description of Courses (http://www.reg.msu.edu/Courses/search.asp)

  • Know the number of credits you can handle. You must have at least 12 credits to be a full-time student.

  • Be on time or early. Know where to meet your adviser.

  • As far as class selection goes, stick with what your adviser suggests. They won't select classes for you.

  • Be open to their suggestions (i.e., classes, advice).

  • Ask how to contact them should you have follow-up questions.
