General Suggestions

broke two pencils
  • If you get practice questions before- use those to help you prepare in advance.

  • Get plenty of sleep the night before.

  • Eat before the exam.

  • Arrive early.

  • Be prepared--know what you need to bring: blue book (they are free from ASMSU in the Student Services Building), pencil, pen, etc.

  • Bring extra pencils/pens in case one runs out of lead/ink.

  • Read the directions first.

  • Read the entire question.

  • Budget your time.

Essay/Short Answer

  • Respond to the question asked.

  • Note how many points each question is worth. Spend more time on those worth more.

  • Answer the entire question.

  • Brainstorm. Make an outline

  • Always restate the question.

  • Make sure your essay has an introduction and conclusion.

  • Watch spelling and punctuation.

  • If you don't know the answer, write down what you do know. (It might jog your memory or you might get partial credit.)

Multiple Choice

  • Read the questions carefully.

  • Look for clues.

  • Be careful when in filling out the scantron.

  • Read all the answers before answering the question or try to answer the question without looking at the answers.

  • If you don't know an answer, skip it and answer it after you complete the test. Make sure you skip a line on the scantron.

  • Don't over-analyze the questions.

  • When in doubt, make an educated guess.

  • Trust your instincts.

  • Note that clues might be hidden in other questions.

  • Pay attention to qualifiers, (i.e., all of the above, a and b, none of the above, etc.).
