  joining a student group

  • Talk to your Mentor to get ideas regarding how to get involved.

  • Refer to http://www.studentlife.msu.edu/activity/orglist/ for a list of MSU student organizations.

  • If there is a particular group you'd like to join, and MSU doesn't have it, create it. Go to http://studentlife.msu.edu/activity/orghand/register.htm for information on how to do this.

    joining a student group

  • Talk to other students about what's available.

  • Attend Sparticipation, which takes place during Fall Welcome. You can learn about many of MSU's student organizations and get free stuff.

  • If you join a student organization, often times you'll make friends, develop leadership skills, learn to manage your time, etc.

  • Determine if you have time for a leadership position before you commit to one.

  • Don't be afraid to say no to commitments you can't handle.

  • Look for groups related to your major or areas of study/interest.

  • Join a student group that interests you, even if it is not within your major.

  • Don't be afraid to say you can no longer be a member of an organization, if it interferes with your academic progress.

  • Don't get over involved. Make sure you have time to do what you are volunteering to do. Academics come first.

  • Benefits of getting involved:
    • Meeting new people.
    • Feeling connected to campus.
    • Making connections and improving networking skills.
