  • Know that you raised your student right and he/she will make you proud.

  • Students need to learn from their mistakes. Let your student make mistakes.

  • Give your student space to make their own decisions, make mistakes, express themselves, etc.

  • When your student has a bad experience in a class, with a professor, job etc., encourage your student to handle the situation . Offer advice and support, but let them do the work. There are many campus and community resources to assist your student i.e., Mentors, Ombudsman, academic advisors, etc.

  • Guide them--don't do it for them.

  • Don't try to re-live your college years through your student. Let your student create their own memories.

  • Keep an open mind to your student's new ideas, experiences, and opinions.

  • Be positive and patient. Adjusting to college can take time, a positive attitude can go
    a long way.

  • Encourage your student to join student organizations, volunteer, pursue research interests and develop relationships with professors.
