    setting up a bank account

  • Decide whether or not you need a bank/credit union account in the local area.

  • Determine where the banks/credit unions are located; select one close to you.

  • Select a bank/credit union with accessible branch offices and ATMs.

  • Know when you will be charged a fee for using an ATM that does not belong to your financial institution.

  • Be aware of fees and hidden charges i.e., when you write checks, transaction fees, if you need a cashier's check, monthly fees, etc.

  • Be aware of the minimum account balance.

  • Ask other students for suggestions when researching what bank/credit union to join.

  • Decide if you want to include your parents on your account. Parents can deposit money into your account.

  • Determine if you want a savings account, checking account, both, or one or the other.

  • ATM/Debit cards are good things to have in place of cash.
